withTobacco Brown, Jess Vaira, Benny Wise + a Mark Woodyard DANCE PARTY
Ashley Jude Productions and the Rickshaw Theatre are proud to present 3 of East Van's favourite singer/songwriters in a TRIPLE THREAT NEW MUSIC RELEASE SHOW!
Join us on Friday, March 25th to celebrate the brand new work of Tobacco Brown, Jess Vaira and Benjamin Wise! After you get serenaded by these three amazing talents - stick around for a dance party a la the Wizard himself... Mr. Mark Woodyard!
Tobacco Brown is travelling the world in search of fast women and loose cars. Upon deciding sometime after his nineteenth birthday that he would like to give music an honest shot-Mr. Brown has been writing and performing almost non-stop. He currently has one album recorded with the help of Edouard Camou at Sinewavz Studios (http://www.sinewavz.com/) and a DVD titled 'The Patio Sessions' directed by Trevor Renney. All available to purchase at Mr.Brown's live shows. Born in Vancouver and raised in London, Mr.Brown currently resides in East Vancouver. He has permanent 'couch spine' and is constantly embarrassing himself. His style has been described as 'Jack Johnson on anti-depressants' but if you ask him and he had to choose, he'll tell you he's more like a 'Drunk Ben Harper.'
Throughout Jess Vaira's music career she's rarely been an artist who steps lightly into a new experience, as she'd always much rather jump in with both feet, ready for anything. Her powerful yet graceful style grew naturally through years of performing jazz and folk music, until exploring tastes led her towards soul and reggae grooves, hip hop hooks and even kids music. As a solo artist her music open, true, and resonates with an beautiful clarity. If Eddie Vedder and Ella Fitzgerald were making Sunday brunch for Fela Kuti, Imogen Heap and Sufjan Stevens, they might be listening to Jess in the background. With an honest, open sound that ranges from round and soulful to light and airy, Jess is a live performer and session artist in much demand for her dynamic and engaging performances. More than "just a voice", her song writing and playing style has also made her a favourite collaborator, as working and creating with other artists has always been close to her heart. Jess has been hard at work with the likes of Randy Ponzio (Shore 104 2010 finalist), DNA6 (lauded west coast hip hop group), Truefold (Vancouver electronic dance duo), and Bobs & LoLo, (Juno nominated children's artists), and the guys from Barnaby Jones with more collaborations on the table every month.
From the UK, Benny Wise brings his honest songwriting and unique performance style to Vancouver, where he has made his home for the last 5 years. A staple at local haunts like Falconetti's - Ben acts as a sort of glue to the local independent music scene. His popular covers include John Mayer, Joe Pugg, Empire of the Sun and many more of his eclectic favourites as well as his own beautifully composed original material.
The Wizard himself, the live looping extraordinaire that has taken Vancouver by storm. Often described as a "Human Jukebox" - his knowledge of music is encyclopedic and his live looping mashups never fail to get people to the dance floor. Whitney Huston metes Wu Tang, Britney Spears meets Daft Punk - throw out almost any popular artist and he'll be able to incorporate it. See him around town at the Steel Toad, Guilt & Copmany, Finch and Barley, the Taphouse, the Warehouse and more - he's a sought after career musician around town and his originals are just as impressive as his covers.
